Parent Group for Navigating Teen Risk-Taking Behaviors
A supportive, skills-based group for parents navigating teen risk-taking behaviors, including problematic screen use, unsafe driving, and substance use.
Adolescence brings growing independence, exploration, and a natural shift in the relationship between teens and their parents. It can also bring new challenges, from screen use and peer influence to substance use, unsafe driving, and other risk-taking behaviors.
For parents, knowing when to step in, when to give more space, and how to remain connected while setting meaningful boundaries can be difficult.
This group provides parents with a supportive space to better understand adolescent development and risk-taking, strengthen communication with their teen, and develop practical ways to respond when concerns arise.
Who Is This Group For?
This group may be a good fit for parents who:
Are concerned about their teen's risk-taking behavior
Feel they don't always know what is happening in their teen's life
Find themselves caught in repeated arguments or power struggles
Feel unsure about when to intervene and when to allow greater independence
Want to remain connected while responding more effectively to concerning behavior
Are concerned about possible substance use or experimentation
Are concerned about problematic screen use and its impact on their teen
Have concerns about unsafe or impulsive driving
The group is designed for parents who want to remain present and influential in their teen's life while developing clearer and more intentional ways of responding to risk-taking behavior.
What We Work On
Understanding Adolescence & Risk-Taking
Understanding the developmental stage of adolescence
Learning how the adolescent brain influences decision-making, impulse control, and sensitivity to rewards
Understanding the role of peers, independence, and exploration
Recognizing warning signs and changes in behavior
Distinguishing between different levels of concern and risk
Understanding how parental responses can influence what happens next
Communication & Parental Presence
Strengthening communication between parents and teens
Staying connected during conflict and disagreement
Reducing unnecessary power struggles and escalation
Strengthening parental self-regulation during difficult interactions
Maintaining parental presence even as teens become more independent
Our Approach
The group draws on principles and tools that emphasize parental presence, self-control, de-escalation, connection, support, and supervision rather than attempting to control the teen.
